About Coach Chris:
What Chris says....
I simply enjoy helping people, especially in their physically active pursuits.
Triathlon started for me as a recreational pursuit 25+ years ago and I have competed in all the tri distances. I have lost count of how many Sprint and Olympic distance races I have done but I have completed 15 or 20 1/2 IM races and 14 Ironman events as well as a number of marathons, including Victoria, Vancouver and Boston.
In 2003 I decided to test myself competitively and have since qualified to compete at the World AG level in the Olympic, 70.3 and ITU Long Course distances. The big one still eludes me!
In the past I have helped coach at UCTC, a number of triathlon camps and worked with a growing number of individual athletes. I have my NCCP Triathlon Competition Introduction certification.
We live full time to Canmore, and I am really enjoying spending more of my time coaching and participating in more activities.
I've started to expand my interests in long distance swimming. In 2016 I was member of the Crazy Canucks, a team of 6 who swam the English Channel. In 2017 I participated in the 11.8 km Skaha Ultra Swim. In September 2019 I again teamed up with the Crazy Canucks to swim the Catalina Channel from Catalina Island to Los Angeles. The same gang are looking to do another long swim and Lake Tahoe is in our sights.
For a challenge I've been doing some more mountain and trail running. In 2014 we ran the Jung Frau, a mountain marathon in Switzerland. August 2019 I ran the iconic Sierre-Zinal mountain run in Switzerland. 32 km with 2200 meters of vertical gain and 1100 meters of descent made for a fun day. Closer to home I have run the Grizzly Ultra Marathon (50km) in Canmore a couple of times.
I also love to XC ski and am a CANSI certified cross country ski instructor in both track and telemark. I have taught for a number of years. I now mostly ski for enjoyment, but am always willing to share tips and feedback!
What Jill says.....
Chris is one of those guys that will stop and help you if you are having trouble fixing your flat (even if you are not riding with him). If you are struggling at the back because you forgot to eat a bar at the last stop he will encourage you to hang onto his wheel and will happily chitchat your way to the end of the ride. He has a tonne of knowledge about triathlon and is a great teacher. His 25+ years of triathlon experience indicates that he is in the more senior age category, but don't let that fool you. He can exit the water near the front of the pack and has humbled many a younger rider when he puts the hammer down.
